Coach Smiley is the history teacher and basketball coach at Bel-Air Academy. He debuts in the episode "Courting Disaster", where he recruits Will for the basketball team after seeing his skills and realizing Will can help the flailing team bounce back.

Smiley is known for his strict behavior, punishing any student to up to 20 laps for the smallest of errors, whether it's talking back or being late. Will is notably the only player that never got punished by Smiley due to being the star of the team. In the episode "My Brother's Keeper", instead of Will, he makes Carlton do laps when they both notice him while he is in disguise spying on the rival team, Malibu.
He also appears in "The Ethnic Tip" and "PSAT Pstory". After the second season, Coach Smiley made no more appearances for the entire series.
